STEP 1 - Review different ways people have depicted your subject matter with face paint. I searched for "face-paint raven" and "geisha face paint" and "face-paint crow" on Google. Look at the images that pop up, absorb, compare, and then begin sketching.
STEP 2 - Sketch at least six.
STEP 3 - Add color using watercolor or gouache.
STEP 4 - Choose the one you're digging the most.
STEP 5 - Transfer the design to your face. Refer to your sketch for this.
The design I'm going for is a kind of 2006 Wickerman, Björk Volta hooded pagan choir, Susan Seddon Boulet Valkyrie type of thing. I'm digging the almost complete darkness of the raven. I'm especially fond of the tales Icelanders tell about them carrying off exposed children in remote expanses of Iceland's historic past farmsteads. They're dark, almost blue-black dark. Their feet and all. Quite beautiful creatures. People in the far north and far western island in Europe and Scandinavia trained them to deliver messages, and looked to them to divine the future.
I added red to the mix, because it looks shocking, and unusual next to the eyes. It had to be a bright red like a geisha, but not necessarily applied like a geisha. I also looked at Johnny Depp's American Indian character for some direction, and even viewed the old "Crow" movie back from the 80's and 90's. Overall I want black pagan beast with red in/around its eyes.
I designed the hood from logwood dyed cotton and feathers.
