These are a great, and enjoyable study! Notan is a word with a Japanese origin.
1.) Obtain a piece of black, and a piece of white paper.
2.) Draw from the edges shapes into the paper using a white colored pencil.
3.) Cut out those shapes and then arrange them around the outside.
4.) Paste the pieces down.
The surface area is the same as when you began, just now it is outside the place it began.
• How has the balance changed?
• Did your cutting and pasting result in symmetry or asymmetry?
• How busy is the result? Simple, complex? Did you use organic line or geometric?
• Did you depict specific content, or rely on abstract forms and patterns?
Notions are an excellent study.
