Perhaps this takes place some time while the husband's wife is still at home, or it might be that she never died. Perhaps she was dreaming. Perhaps he was dreaming. Perhaps he is gone, and she is still here.
Is the figure beneath the troll the husband?
Is the figure beneath the troll the husband who she has never met?
Is the figure beneath the troll really the troll, and the troll the figure?
Time does not have to occur in a linear fashion, there are things we are still learning about the husband, wife, and the trolls. It could be the husband was really a troll. It could be that the narrator is really the wife, or really the husband. All of these possibilities depending on the viewer are what make this art so wonderful to compose.
